During the next few weeks there will be a celebration of food taking place on the island of Anglesey with two popular food festivals.
Menai Seafood Festival, which this year takes place on Saturday 20 August from 10am-5pm, was set up in 2013 to promote the local fishing industry and to reconnect people with the array of quality fish and seafood available from the North Wales shores. The first event attracted well over 10,000 people. Since then, the festival has grown year on year and is now a firm favourite on the North Wales food event calendar.
The festival takes place on the streets of Menai Bridge around the harbour front near Dylan’s Restaurant and brings together local fishermen, farmers and producers to display the amazing variety of seafood and other produce sourced from the area.
As well as sampling delicious local food there is a chance to see how to create your own fabulous dishes at one of the cookery demonstrations. Food and drink stallholders include Red Boat ice cream, Moch Llyn pork, Celtic Spirit, Llechwedd Meats, Island Cupcakes and Caws Rhyd y Delyn cheesemakers.
The festival also addresses the issue of enjoying seafood in a sustainable way with interactive educational activities including seafood safaris and tours around Bangor University’s new Marine Science building. Thanks to the team behind the festival, pupils from seven Anglesey primary schools have been learning about the marine environment and the types of fish and sea creatures that live in the local shores. On 10 and 11 September, just a few miles along the coast from Menai, it’s the turn of Beaumaris Food Festival to offer tasty treats. Against the backdrop of the 12th century Beaumaris castle, the town green will be dotted with marquees and gazebos, offering tantalising foodie nibbles, local Welsh treats and international street food.
There will also be chance to learn from top local chefs as they show how to turn regional food into fabulous signature dishes! Exhibitors at Beaumaris Food Festival include Snowdonia Cheese Company, butchers Edwards of Conwy, The Anglesey Brewing Company and Simply Relish. Visit www.beaumarisfoodfestival.co.uk
